Q: What are the outdoor activities that I can do around Nogales?
A: There are many outdoor activities for visitors to experience in our area. Starting from downtown Nogales, the Pimeria Alta Historical Society & Museum (0.9mi/4 minutes from hotel) is a must for history buffs wanting to learn about the northern Pima Indians that once occupied the area. This small compact museum has an ongoing rotating display of artifacts. Once you are done there, you can take one of three self-guided historical walking tours of downtown Nogales (0.9mi/4minutes from hotel). You will find maps for all three walks at www.nogalesusa.com. The walks cover short distances but are varying degrees of difficulty (the town of Nogales is built on small hills) and will showcase what early Nogales was like through the architecture of the homes still standing from the early 20th century. If bird watching is an interest, then you might know already that the Patagonia - Sonoita Creek Preserve (17.6mi/28minutes from hotel) is a premier birding area during the bird migration season. This location is the center of the Santa Cruz county birding area and is not to be missed. If you're interests run more towards winetasting, then the high desert area of the Mountain Empire is the place for you to go. Down load the Sonoita/Elgin Wine Trail map at https://www.arizonawine.org/sonoitaWineTrail.html, select 2 - 3 wineries from the ten on the map to visit. We recommend beginning at the Dos Cabezas Wine Works. They are growing into a wine brand to watch in the community. Lastly, if you're looking for a combination of shopping, hiking and historical, then a visit to Tubac Presidio State Historical Park (21.6mi/25minutes from hotel) is a must. You'll find a small museum, picnic grounds and the trail head to the Anza Trail all in one place. After spending time there, take yourself over to the small arty town of Tubac where within a half mile radius you'll find over fifty local artisans making and selling silver and turquoise jewelry, hammered iron decorative arts, painted clay pots and more. And shopping isn't complete without those tasty bites and cool refreshments offered at several restaurants and cafes scattered throughout the town.
