Madera Canyon has several rules that must be followed by everyone. If you bring your dog, it must always be on a leash. You’re required to throw away all trash in the bear-proof receptacles. No bird calls are permitted to attract any winged creature. Radios may be played but the volume must be low. And smoking is only allowed in your car or at a picnic site.

Parking areas, which are located throughout Madera Canyon, have fee stations where you can pay by cash. Exact amounts are required as change cannot be given. You can also pay by check. Make sure to park in a designated area. If you don’t, your car will be ticketed and maybe even towed.

  • Where will I find Madera Canyon picnic tables?

Picnic tables and grills are located near the parking areas. Please note that fires can only be built in the grills. And since there’s no firewood in Madera Canyon, you must bring your own charcoal. And make sure the fire is completely out before heading out. For larger groups (up to 30), you’ll want to seek out the Whitehouse Picnic area, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • What types of hiking trails are available in Madera Canyon?

You’ll encounter everything from easy walking paths to challenging expert trails that lead to the top of Mt. Wrightson, which is over 9,400 feet high. If you go the latter route, make sure you have good hiking boots and layered clothing as the weather will vary. There are also paved ADA-accessible trails. For your safety, bring lots of water and always stay on the trails.
